Residents from seven Ogun communities, including Araromi-Ilugun-Itoko, have raised alarm over the perilous state of their road and the menacing gully erosion that not only destroyed the route, but also poses a severe threat to their homes, especially during rainfall.
Armed with placards bearing messages like “Gov Dapo Abiodun, come to our aid at Araromi-Ilugun-Itoko” and “We can’t access our houses again due to gully erosion,” the protesters emphasized the urgent need for assistance.
Chairman of Araromi-Ilugun-Itoko Community Development Association, Mr Okuneye Alaba Ezekiel, while speaking with newsmen, expressed deep concern, stating, “The gully erosion is really threatening the existence of the foundation of our communities. It started in June this year and it has become a source of serious concern to the residents. In fact, we believe that disaster looms should nothing be done on this terrible gully if the next rainfall should begin.”
Quest Times further reports that Ezekiel pleaded with both the state and Federal Government, particularly the Ministry of Environment, to address the crisis.
Also, he stressed the urgency of constructing a substantial drainage system to divert water away, preventing further damage.
The affected communities, including Victory Estate, Surulere, Peaceland, Ilugun Central, Sunshine Estate, and Abata CDA, fear the potential loss of lives and property if swift action is not taken before the onset of the next rainy season.
