Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has equaled compatriot Obafemi Martins’ UEFA Champions League goalscoring record.
Osimhen scored in Napoli’s 1-1 draw with AC Milan on Tuesday night.
The Nigerian striker’s spectacular header in the Partenopei’s 1-1 draw with Milan tied him with Martins for the most goals scored by a Nigerian player in a single Champions League season.
Martins set a record as a Nigerian footballer when he scored five goals for another Italian club, Inter Milan, in the UEFA Champions League in the 2004/2005 season.
Osimhen’s goal on Tuesday, however, was insufficient for Napoli to advance to the Champions League semi-finals.
His 90th-minute header, assisted by Giacomo Raspadori, was his 26th goal of the 2022/23 season from 31 games.
He had scored with a clinical finish, but it was correctly ruled out due to an inadvertent handball in the action. It summed up Napoli’s night of frustration as he huffed and puffed without joy.
Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti, on the other hand, has made some admissions following his team’s exit from the Champions League.
