Over 70% of Nigerians support the Supreme Court’s decision to temporarily suspend the Federal Government’s plan to end the usage of old naira notes on February 10, 2023.
This is according to a recent online survey done by THE QUEST TIMES, Nigeria’s most trusted online news platform, on Wednesday to determine Nigerians’ reactions to the Supreme Court’s verdict.
Recall that a seven-member panel led by Justice John Okoro had stopped the move of the federal government in a ruling in an exparte application brought by three northern states of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara.
The survey, which ran for 24 hours on the microblogging platform Twitter, found that 70.6% of voters agreed with the Supreme Court’s verdict on the subject, while 29.4% disagreed.
The three states had specifically applied for an order of Interim Injunction restraining “the federal government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) or the commercial banks from suspending or determining or ending on February 10, 2023, the time frame with which the now older version of the 200, 500 and 1,000 denomination of the naira may no longer be legal tender pending the hearing and determination of their motion on notice for an interlocutory injunction”.
One commentator, Dr Gbenga (@DrGlatee), a livestock Farm development and Management consultant, said “My take, the problem is not the redesign. it’s in the implementation of the recent CBN cash/ cashless policy. You can’t mop close to N3Tn in circulation and replace by alleged 10% in a country like Nigeria. How will the majority transact and make a living?”
