There is growing support for the former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, to take the reins of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) amid the suspension of its former National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu.
The suspension of Ayu was the result of allegations by the Igyorov Ward Executive Committee, including charges of anti-party activities and non-payment of dues.
Despite the Benue High Court’s decision to suspend Ayu, he is contesting the ruling in the appeals court. However, in the wake of the party’s loss in the recent Presidential Election and the persistent internal discord, PDP leaders are working behind the scenes to appoint a new chairman.
Reports suggest that influential figures, including former G-5 leader Nyesom Wike, are increasingly inclined to back Bukola Saraki as Ayu’s replacement. It’s believed that Wike’s group views Saraki as a figure capable of uniting the party and maintaining their influence.
Sources close to the matter stress the importance of supporting Saraki, as failing to do so could lead to the appointment of a less accommodating chairman who may not align with their interests. They perceive Saraki as a reconciler and a trustworthy, neutral leader with the capacity and resources to rebuild the party.
Even the Atiku group seems comfortable with Saraki, acknowledging the influence of Wike. The exchange of visits between Wike and Saraki also signified the first step in building a united front.
Originally, three names were considered for the position: Jerry Gana by the Wike Group and Babangida Aliyu by the Atiku Group. However, Saraki has emerged as a compromise candidate for both factions, given his appeal to various party stakeholders.
Reacting to these developments, the Deputy National Youth Leader, Hon. Timothy Osadolor, affirmed that there is currently no vacancy in the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party. He noted that Ayu is appealing his suspension in court, and as long as he remains in court, the position is not vacant. The acting chairman is also performing well.
While Saraki’s visits to key figures have raised questions, Osadolor clarified that they should not be interpreted as pressure on the party’s leadership, as these are meetings among friends. For now, PDP is focused on its midterm convention or any future vacancy for the chairman’s position.
