The Lagos State Police Command has obtained a court order to detain Seun Kuti, the embattled Afrobeat singer, until Monday, according to his lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Thursday, the lawyer revealed that the police had approached the Magistrate’s Court in Yaba to request a modification of the previously granted bail for the singer.
According to Fusika, Seun Kuti wasn’t represented during the proceedings as his legal team weren’t notified by the police about their new request.
By the time he arrived at the court, the decision had already been made.
Despite the police’s application for bail variation, the Magistrate declined the request and extended Kuti’s detention until Monday.
Earlier this week, the court granted Kuti bail under specific conditions that were to be fulfilled within 48 hours.
He has been held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, after voluntarily surrendering to the police on Monday following an arrest order issued by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba.
The arrest stemmed from a video capturing Kuti slapping and assaulting a police officer in Lagos.
