Some Nigerians are currently protesting in the Federal Capital Territory over alleged manipulation of the presidential election results in 2023.
Protesters gathered at Abuja’s popular Unity Fountain were armed with placards bearing messages such as “INEC is corrupt,” “INEC is biased,” and others.
The protesters vowed to shut down the country over what they called daylight robbery by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in collusion with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to subvert the will of Nigerians in the recently concluded election.
Protesters also urged the United Nations to press President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that justice is served regardless of who is gored.
Some foreign election observers and diplomatic Corps were spotted at the protest site to observe the protest. While armed security personnel from the Nigerian police, the Department of State Security (DSS), the Civil Defence Corps, and others have been stationed within and around the protest site to prevent a breakdown in law and order.
However, INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu has stated that the certificate of return will be presented to President-Elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the National Collation Centre at any time.
