The legal uncertainties surrounding Yemi Cardoso’s nomination as the new governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have been resolved with the resignation of Godwin Emefiele.
It has come to light that Emefiele, who was suspended from his position, tendered his resignation in August, as reported by Reuters.
According to sources, Emefiele submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu in June. However, his initial submission to the Department of State Services (DSS) was declined, as the law stipulated that it could only be submitted to the president.

The announcement of Cardoso’s nomination as the new CBN governor was made by Ajuri Ngelale, the special adviser to the president on media and publicity.
President Tinubu’s nomination list also included four new deputy governors: Emem Nnana Usoro, Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Bala M. Bello.
Regarding Emefiele’s suspension and subsequent legal proceedings, President Tinubu suspended him on June 9th and instructed him to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the deputy governor of the operations directorate. Subsequently, the DSS announced that Emefiele was in their custody for investigative reasons.
Emefiele was later arraigned on July 25th on a two-count charge related to the “illegal possession” of firearms in a federal high court in Lagos. He was granted bail in the sum of N20 million following the arraignment.
