Former Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has backed calls for President Muhammadu Buhari’s impeachment, in the face of escalating insecurity.
On Wednesday, senators of opposition political parties handed Buhari a six-week ultimatum to secure Nigeria or be impeached.
“The bottom line today that we have reached is that we are in a state of sheer incompetence. There is no other way you can mention it,” the lawmaker said during an appearance on ChannelsTV on Wednesday.
President Buhari has just held a meeting with his security chiefs. Reacting to the planned security meeting a day prior, Abaribe criticised President Buhari’s approach to tackling insecurity and said the endless meetings between Buhari and his service chiefs have become a waste of everyone’s time.
“How many security meetings have we had? Every time something happens, you gather all of them and say you are going to have another security meeting. Nothing comes out of it, it gets worse.
“Asking the rest of us to just fold our hands for this administration to derail this country, I don’t think it is in anybody’s interest.
“We have seen that they can no longer do anything. How could a President, after what happened in Kuje, go there and let the whole world know (that) something is wrong. What has happened since then?” he queried.
In the last couple of weeks, terrorists and bandits have abducted unarmed civilians on an unprecedented scale, blown up a maximum security prison and freed inmates, attacked the president’s convoy, attacked the president’s brigade of guards, abducted police officers and have forced the authorities to shut down schools in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.
Abaribe is an All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) lawmaker who represents Abia South Senatorial District in the Senate. He recently defected from the PDP, Nigeria’s biggest opposition political party.
