Five people were confirmed dead yesterday, while 12 others sustained injuries, following an accident that occurred around Foursquare Church, Ajebo, along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
The incident occurred around 1:07 p.m. involving a Mazda bus with plate number SMK685YG and a Howo truck with plate number ZE-1210G.
According to reports, the driver of the bus, who was already sleeping due to fatigue, lost control of the vehicle and collided with the oncoming truck.
Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the unfortunate event.
She said: “The fatal crash occurred at about 1:07a.m., on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. A total of 18 persons were involved, comprising 10 male adults and eight female adults. Twelve people were injured. Unfortunately, five persons were recorded dead from the crash.
“The suspected causes of the fatal crash were tyre burst, speed, and fatigue, which led to loss of control because the driver slept off on the wheel and ran into a moving truck. The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, while the corpses were deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo.”
Anthony Uga, the Commander of the Ogun Sector Command, emphasized the importance of responsible driving, advising motorists to prioritize safety by avoiding speeding and ensuring their vehicles are equipped with reliable tyres.
Furthermore, Uga urged drivers to prioritize rest to prevent fatigue-related accidents, while passengers were encouraged to remain vigilant and alert authorities if they observe any signs of driver drowsiness.
