The Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) journey with a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé, Abidjan. Victor Osimhen’s first-half header saved the day for the Eagles.
Amid debates over the goalkeeping department, coach Jose Peseiro opted for a change, starting Stanley Nwabali in goal. William Troost-Ekong and Semi Ajayi led the defense, flanked by Zaidu Sanusi and Ola Aina.
AlHassan Yusuf and Frank Onyeka formed a double pivot, supporting Alex Iwobi, Victor Osimhen, Lookman Ademola, and Moses Simon in attack.
Despite entering the competition with a less-than-ideal form, the Eagles demonstrated a desire to overcome inconsistency. Early on, Iwobi tested Equatorial Guinea’s goalkeeper with a half-volley, setting the tone for an engaging match.
Equatorial Guinea surprised Nigeria with a 36th-minute lead, capitalizing on a clearance mix-up. However, Victor Osimhen swiftly responded with a well-timed header, equalizing for the Super Eagles.
Nigeria continued to press, with Simon’s shot hitting the woodwork late in the first half. Equatorial Guinea’s goalkeeper, Jesús Owono, showcased heroics in the second half, denying Sanusi and Osimhen.
Despite several missed opportunities, the Super Eagles settled for a draw. The focus now shifts to the upcoming clash against Ivory Coast in the second group game on Thursday.
