There is palpable excitement on social media as the National Basketball Association (NBA) has announced that three Nigerian superstars, Burna Boy, Tems and Rema will headline the NBA All-Star Game 2023 Halftime show.
The announcement was made in a post on the NBA’s official Twitter handle.
The tweet reads, “GRAMMY Award-winning singer, songwriter and record producer @burnaboy, 2023 GRAMMY Award-winning singer and Oscar-nominated singer and producer @temsbaby and rapper and singer @heisrema will headline the NBA All-Star Game 2023 halftime show with an Afrobeats-themed performance.”
The NBA All-Star Game will take place in Utah on Sunday, February 19th.
In reaction to the post, excited Nigerians and Afrobeats fans took to Twitter to celebrate the milestone, while some Nigerians in the US questioned the choice of Utah due to its demographic and racial history.
Here are some reactions gathered by The Quest Times:
@droid254 These guys have worked hard to take Afrobeats international
@lizzlelegacy This is insane!!! 3 Nigerian Afrobeats stars headlining one of the biggest sport events in the world like what??? The only issue is the location which is racist ville utah but…a win is a win
@mimijaxxx Afrobeats is taking over the world. We love to see it.
@KwameLaker Davido at the WC and now 3 Nigerians to headline All Star HT performance. Nigerian music is far gone.
@Fidelsoji Tems don enter A-list without dropping an album
@joglovu one of the most racist cities in murica and they got 3 Nigerians headlining da half time show
@JoeyAkan Afrobeats artists are expanding their institutional support and involvement stateside, one that entrenches them further in the market. We’re past the fringes. We court side. I expect Roc Nation to already have an Afrobeats-themed Super Bowl halftime performance lined up.
