Former Senate Minority Leader and the current senator representing Abia South senatorial district, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has refuted claims that Igbo people lack unity among themselves to produce a presidential candidate, unlike other regions.
Speaking on Signature TV, Senator Abaribe pointed to the strong support that the Igbo community gave to Peter Obi, the Labor Party’s presidential candidate, in the last presidential election as evidence to counter this notion.
He emphasized that Igbo voters didn’t choose Obi simply because he was Igbo but because they viewed him as the most capable candidate to address our economic challenges.

Abaribe stated, “Igbos may not always show love for each other, but what happened during the last election? Peter Obi received overwhelming support in Igbo territory. Anyone who questioned this fact later realized that it was true. Why? Because Igbos regarded him as the most qualified person to manage our economy during this critical period when we need a rational, cautious, meticulous, and fiscally responsible leader.”
When questioned about whether they voted for Obi solely because he was Igbo, Abaribe responded, “No, Igbos didn’t vote for him because he was Igbo; they voted for him because they saw him as the best candidate. I am open to challenges from anyone. This is why his appeal extended beyond the Igbo community and resonated nationwide.”
