Human rights activist Omoleye Sowore has arrived in the United States after five years to reunite with his family and friends.
Sowore, known for his involvement in the #RevolutionNow movement and his two-time presidential candidacy, was warmly welcomed by loved ones upon his arrival on Saturday.
The journey marks a significant moment for Sowore, whose passport was recently released by a Federal High Court in Abuja, Nigeria. The court’s decision came after the Nigerian government withdrew its treasonable felony case against him, allowing him to travel abroad freely.
Accompanied by supporters, Sowore departed from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on a United Airlines flight to Washington, D.C.
Upon completing US immigration protocols, Sowore continued his journey to Newark International Airport, where he was joyfully greeted by his family and friends, including his wife, Opeyemi, and his two children.
In a gesture of recognition for his activism and courage, the City of Haworth organized a reception in Sowore’s honor.
The event, attended by notable figures such as US Congressman Josh Gottheimer and members of the diaspora community, served as a platform to celebrate Sowore’s contributions to human rights and social justice.
During the reception, Sowore expressed gratitude to Congressman Gottheimer for his assistance in facilitating his return to the US. He also thanked the women who led the campaign for his release in Haworth, New Jersey, acknowledging their dedication and resilience.
