The Labour Party, LP, has responded following widespread reports suggesting that its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is planning to defect to another political party ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
The reports claimed that due to the lingering crisis in LP and other issues, Obi has concluded plans to abandon the party and join a new platform, with some suggesting that he plans to join the Social Democratic Party, SDP.
In reaction to the viral reports, Dr. Yunusa Salisu Tanko, Chief Spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council for the 2023 election, stated, “It is not true. As far as I am concerned, there is nothing like that.”
Meanwhile, Obi has not addressed this rumor since it began to spread, neither has any other leader of the party said anything about it until Tanko’s clarification denying the claim.
The alleged move by Obi, a prominent figure within the Labour Party, had garnered significant attention and raised questions about the party’s stability and future prospects. However, with Tanko’s clarification, the party seeks to put an end to the speculation surrounding Obi’s purported departure.
