With the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) announcing the conditional calling-off of a protracted strike action that lasted 8 months, here are 5 things to expect in and around campuses as students return to their various schools.
1. Rusty students everywhere
Students who are returning to schools after 8 months will most likely find it difficult to pick up on courses and classes they left behind because of the gap in lectures, study and exams.
After 8 months without lectures, students will need to first catch up on their old courses before moving on to new topics. Tough.
2. Headcount to know those who have dropped out, left the country or gotten pregnant
It is safe to assume that not all students will resume on Monday.
After 8 long months at home, some have joined the great beyond (RIP), others have given up on education, started businesses or “entered streets” (I mean, who school epp? as they say) while some have “japa’d” (migrated) to greener pastures.
Remember Amaka, that single classmate of yours that all of you were eyeing? She’s probably resuming with a ring on her finger and a baby bump, probably twins.
Sorry guys!!
3. Interstate travels x 100
Interstate travel is about to witness a bump as students scramble to return to campuses all around the nation in time.
Just like in December when high demand means the transport fare surges, we can expect a bump in transport fare in the coming weeks.
Safety on these roads is another issue. The roads are littered with “principalities” (checkpoints, bandits).
Also, you may need a boat, canoe, inflatable raft, and the ability to swim, as well as a life jacket for some parts of your journey, as parts of Nigeria are currently under water.
4. Student and landlord drama on rent
The students who left schools without their rents expiring are probably resuming school to battle it out with landlords (that’s if their apartments still exist).
They will also have to grapple with inflationary rent rates and their guardians will probably have to pay more in rent than they did 8 months ago.
5. Hookup price would compete with Naira fall
As the prices of goods and “services” skyrocket, we can also expect that the prices of “services” a certain group who shall not be named offers, will be affected.
Na so the thing just be…
