President Bola Tinubu has urged the Super Eagles to step up their game and deliver better performances in the remaining stages of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
Expressing his concerns about the team’s showing in the group stage, the President’s message was conveyed through the Minister of Sports, John Enoh, who spoke to the players via Zoom on Wednesday night in Abidjan.
Enoh, relaying the President’s sentiments, stated, “The President told me to inform the players that he wasn’t too impressed with the last match. However, now that they are past the group stages, he expects them to impress him more in the upcoming matches.”
During the meeting with the President, Enoh emphasized the need for continuous improvement, drawing parallels with Egypt’s struggle to qualify in 2022, yet reaching the finals.
Team captain Ahmed Musa expressed gratitude for the encouragement from the sports minister and extended an invitation to President Tinubu to attend a live match, believing it would boost the players’ motivation.
The Super Eagles are set to face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the last 16 of the tournament on Saturday at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. The team is determined to showcase an elevated performance as they progress in the competition.
