President Muhammadu Buhari met with the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, only hours after the Supreme Court declared that the February 10 deadline for the validity of three old naira notes could not be postponed.
In a unanimous verdict, a seven-member Supreme Court panel led by Justice John Okoro issued an interim injunction following an ex parte petition filed by the governors of Kogi, Kaduna, and Zamfara states.
The Supreme Court also ruled that the Federal Government and the apex bank could not extend the deadline till the outcome of the hearing on February 15.
The meeting’s outcome is unknown, but the visit by the apex bank chief is not unrelated to the Supreme Court’s ruling.
