Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has not ruled out contesting for the position of Governor of Kebbi State.
He however states that he is yet to publicly declare to run, contrary to media reports of Tuesday, April 5.
In a statement, Malami’s spokesperson, Umar Gwandu, said the clarification became necessary following “a false and fabricated publication in some sections of the media.”

The statement adds that the “Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, (Dr.) Abubakar Malami, SAN has not yet declared interest to contest any elective position come 2023.”
It is public knowledge that Malami has been nursing a governorship ambition. He had previously told close friends that he intends to govern Kebbi someday.
In 2014, Malami picked up the nomination form to run for Governor on the platform of the APC, but lost out to incumbent Kebbi Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu in the APC primary election.
In his latest statement, the controversial attorney general says his interest “to contest for a political position was never a hidden affair or clandestine operation that could be reported as a scoop by a section of the media.”
A video of the purported declaration had made the rounds on social media earlier in the week.
However, Malami described the video as being “mischievously translated with fabricated insertions and interpolations that cannot in spirit and context establish the misinformation circulated.”
In 2011, Malami served as the National Legal Adviser of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC).
CPC is one of the legacy parties that would later form the APC.
Malami was among those who drafted the manifesto of the APC.
He was also a member of the inter-party merger committees of the CPC, ACN, ANPP and a faction of APGA.
