Nigerian rapper and songwriter, Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, popularly known as Phyno, has shared valuable advice with young artists, urging them to steer clear of desperation, especially when it comes to signing record deals.
Phyno, a record producer hailing from Anambra, provided counsel to up-and-coming musicians, cautioning against taking the so-called ‘easy’ road to success and the pitfalls of desperation.
He recounted a moment in his career when he was advised to join a cult or engage in rituals to achieve success. However, he firmly rejected such suggestions, believing in the importance of hard work as the sole path to genuine success.
“A couple of friends told me to blow, I must join a cult or sacrifice something or someone, I told them the price is too much. I’ll never do such,” Phyno stated.
Phyno also warned aspiring artists about the perils of signing record deals out of desperation, as labels often take advantage of desperate artists, offering them unfavorable contracts.
“Imagine begging a label to sign you,” Phyno said. “What kind of terms will they give you? They already know you are desperate and they will use you. At the beginning, you might not see it, but give it time, you’ll regret it.”
Affectionately referred to as “Ezege,” Phyno emphasized the importance of patience for young artists, urging them to stay focused on their craft. He highlighted that if they possess talent and work hard, success will inevitably come their way.
“Young talents need to relax, do not be desperate about record deals or being in the spotlight,” Phyno said. “Keep working, when it’s time you’ll shine.”
Phyno’s guidance comes in the wake of the recent passing of Nigerian singer Mohbad, who was a member of Marlian Records and was accused of exploitation and mistreatment by the record label’s management.
