Douye Diri, the incumbent Governor of Bayelsa and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has won the just-concluded gubernatorial election.
He secured 175,196 votes while his nearest competitor, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC), trailed behind with 110,118 votes.
The conclusive nature of Diri’s victory became evident during the collation of results from all eight local government areas in the State on Monday afternoon.
Prof. Faruq Kuta, the state’s Returning Officer, finalized the collation process around 12:42 pm, announcing the imminent formal declaration of the election winner.
Incumbent Governor Diri won six out of the eight local government areas, while his primary contender, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured victories in only two LGAs, namely Kolokuma/Opokuma and Ogbia.
This election was part of three gubernatorial polls held on Saturday, November 11, 2023, alongside Imo and Kogi states.
In Imo state, Governor Hope Uzodinma of the APC successfully secured re-election for another four-year term. Meanwhile, in Kogi state, Ododo of the APC emerged as the Governor-Elect, defeating competitors Dino Melaye of PDP and Muri Ajaka of SDP.
