Government of Ogun State has shut down Supreme Agro Limited, an agro-processing company in Igbesa community, for allegedly polluting the environment.
Quest Times reports that the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, disclosed this yesterday, saying that the company was found guilty of discharging untreated wastewater into the community, which has greatly affected the well-being of residents.
Oresanya said that the company had been warned several times by the State Environmental Task Force and the commissioner, but it failed to heed the warnings.
He mentioned that the company will remain shut until it restores the environment back to normal and is more responsible in its production processes.
The Igbesa Traditional Council was also extolled by the commissioner for notifying the government of the unethical environmental practices of the company.
Furthermore, he urged other councils, communities, residents, and public-spirited individuals to join the state in enthroning proper environmental governance statewide.
Oresanya used the opportunity to warn companies operating in the state that the government will not tolerate any carelessness in their production processes.
He said that the government will continue to provide an enabling environment for companies to operate, but they must be straight and do the right thing all the time.
