Iran unleashed a barrage of missiles towards Israel in retaliation for an Israeli strike on an Iranian embassy complex in Syria, marking an unprecedented escalation in the conflict in the Middle East.
More than 200 missiles and drones were launched towards Israel on Saturday night, Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson Daniel Hagari confirmed. Israel’s aerial defense systems, including fighter jets, intercepted many of these threats.
“Our planes are still in the air intercepting targets and we are ready for any threat that will come to Israel,” Hagari stated.
As the attack unfolded, public shelters were opened in Haifa, and large gatherings were banned. Israel closed its airspace, along with nearby Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon.
CNN’s team in Jerusalem reported hearing explosions and sirens as apparent intercepts took place early Sunday morning local time.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry justified the strikes as self-defense in response to the targeting of its consulate in Damascus. The ministry warned of potential future escalation if Israel “makes another mistake.”
US President Joe Biden convened with his national security team to assess the situation. The US reiterated its unwavering support for Israel’s security, with officials confirming the interception of Iranian drones by US air defense systems in the Middle East.
Separately, Hezbollah claimed to have launched rockets targeting IDF air defense headquarters in the Golan Heights.
Tensions had been escalating since Israel allegedly bombed Iran’s embassy complex in Syria earlier in the month, resulting in the deaths of Iranian officials.
Iran’s Supreme Leader and President vowed retaliation for the attack, while Israel remained prepared for a direct assault.
In response to the heightened threat, the US bolstered its military presence in the region and sent General Michael Kurilla to Israel for talks with Israeli military leaders.
The international community expressed concerns over the potential for escalation, with the UN Secretary-General urging an immediate cessation of hostilities. Regional powers Saudi Arabia and Egypt joined European countries in condemning Iran’s actions and expressing support for Israel.
Latin American countries also denounced the violence, with Argentina’s president returning home to coordinate crisis efforts.
