Human rights activist and journalist, Yele Sowore, took to social media today to celebrate his resilient mom, Esther Kehinde Sowore, on her 73rd birthday. Fondly known as “EK” by her late husband, Mrs. Sowore’s resilience and determination shine through despite facing health challenges in recent years.
In a glittering message, Sowore writes, “Happy Birthday to my mum, Esther Kehinde Sowore, fondly called “EK” by her husband (my late dad). She turned 73 years old today. Even though the last four to five years have taken a significant toll on her health, she continues to trudge on resiliently. My mum had me when she was only twenty years old; between then and when she stopped making babies, she popped 11 kids without getting to a maternity ward of any known hospital.”
In demonstration of her courage, Sowore noted that she courageously stood up for her right to education, expressing a desire to enroll in high school alongside her son in 1980. Despite initial resistance, Mrs. Sowore pursued her education through after-school “adult education” classes, eventually obtaining an auxiliary nursing certificate to fulfill her dream.
Yele Sowore’s heartfelt birthday message honors his mother’s indomitable spirit and her unwavering pursuit of self-improvement. Despite facing challenges along the way, Mrs. Sowore’s determination serves as an inspiration to her family and all who know her.
