Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, revealed his engagement with security authorities following an invitation by the Department of State Services (DSS) over his remarks on bandit activities within the country.
Expressing his views on the matter, Sheikh Gumi emphasized the necessity of the invitation and disclosed that the interaction with security personnel was constructive. He stated, “Yes, we had a productive interaction on how to curb banditry as we are all trying – each in his own sphere – to tackle the monster bedeviling the nation. There was no animosity but courtesy and full of respect.”
The Minister of Information and Orientation, Mohammed Idris, affirmed the invitation of the prominent cleric for questioning, underlining the principle that no one is above the law. Sheikh Gumi had notably offered to engage in dialogue with bandits responsible for the abduction at Kuriga Government Secondary and LEA Primary Schools in Kaduna State’s Chikun Local Government Area.
Encouraging a proactive approach towards addressing the issue, Sheikh Gumi urged President Bola Tinubu not to overlook the opportunity for dialogue, cautioning against repeating past mistakes. He referenced former President Muhammadu Buhari’s stance on refusing to engage with bandits.
Furthermore, amidst concerns and speculations, Sheikh Gumi reassured the public through a social media post titled, ‘Only one person is above the law: The Innocent!’ affirming the amicable nature of the discussion with security officials. He concluded by stressing the importance of national unity and collaboration in achieving lasting peace.
Sheikh Gumi’s involvement in negotiating for the release of abducted individuals on behalf of state governments has been notable. However, recent government allegations linking his associate, Tukur Mamu, to terrorism financing have been met with condemnation. Sheikh Gumi emphasized that such labeling should only be done by a competent court.
