The process of selecting the new Olubadan was faced with an unexpected obstacle yesterday as eight out of the eleven kingmakers refrained from attending a crucial meeting called by Chief Rashidi Ladoja, the Head of the Ibadan Traditional Council, at Mapo Hall.
In a meeting aimed at initiating the selection procedures for the next Olubadan, only Chief Ladoja was present, with the remaining kingmakers conspicuously absent.
Their absence has cast doubt on the nomination process, given their pivotal role in the selection.
Notable titles among the absentees included Balogun, Otun Balogun, Osi Balogun, Ashipa Balogun, and the Ekerin Balogun, alongside Otun Olubadan, Osi Olubadan, Ashipa Olubadan, Ekerin Olubadan, and Iyalode, forming the Olubadan-in-Council.
Efforts to contact Oba Amidu Ajibade, the Ekerin Olubadan, for comments on their absence proved futile, with unanswered calls.
Speculation suggests the boycott may stem from past tensions between Chief Ladoja and other members, particularly concerning the contentious issue of beaded crowns by late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, a stance Ladoja opposed.
Furthermore, when Governor Seyi Makinde endorsed the coronation and elevation of the kings, Ladoja abstained from the ceremony, highlighting his disapproval.
Unlike his counterparts who embraced the title of “Oba,” Ladoja has maintained the title of high Chief.
Addressing journalists after the unfruitful meeting, Ladoja clarified, “The other members feel that the Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has not communicated with them. They mentioned they were unable to ascertain his health condition. They stated that when he’s ready, he will engage with them, and we will reconvene the meeting. The Olubadan-designate is expected to be present.”
Explaining his sole presence, Ladoja elucidated, “A meeting was scheduled for today, and as the convener, I am present.”
Despite the setback, Ladoja remains hopeful, affirming, “The next step is for them to come when they are ready. I have called them, and their reason is that the Olubadan-designate has not communicated with them.”
