Two years after the #EndSARS protests that brought Nigeria to the precipice, there is tension in the polity as youths have vowed to commemorate the anniversary of the Lekki tollgate shooting of October 20, 2020.
It would be the second year a drive-through, walk-through protest would be commemorated at the venue, in honour of those who lost their lives on the night.
Nigerian comedian and actor, Debo Adedayo popularly addressed as Mr Macaroni, disclosed this in a tweet on Wednesday.
According to him, the rally would hold at Lekki Tollgate, Lagos Island on October 20, 2022.
“Peaceful Walk tomorrow in honor of all #EndSars and Police Brutality Victims!!!
We no go fit ever forget!!!! ✊🏿” He tweeted.
The #EndSARS anti-police brutality protest was a two-week nationwide peaceful demonstration embarked upon by youths in October of 2020, calling for the ban of a now defunct police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which was notorious for harassing, profiling, extorting and killing innocent Nigerians–especially young Nigerians.
The protests across the country degenerated into the killing of innocent people and destruction of public infrastructure, after military and police personnel stormed the Lekki Tollgate in highbrow Lagos just before dark, and reportedly fired live rounds at protesters from point-blank range on October 20, 2020.
The #EndSARS memorial also took place in October 2021, with youths and celebrities driving through the venue of the “massacre” and tooting car horns as they did.
