An unconfirmed report trending in the media has it that President Bola Tinubu has appointed a Retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to reports in some online Media (The Quest Times excluded), President Tinubu approved the appointment on Tuesday night.
It further stated that Odumosu, a former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, is subject to confirmation by the Senate.
The speculations noted that Odumosu replaces Abdulrasheed Bawa, who was recently suspended by President Tinubu to pave way for investigation into allegations of abuse of power levelled against him.
The new EFCC boss retired from the Nigeria Police Force in January 2022, shortly after his elevation to the rank of Assistant Inspector General (AIG) and after serving for 32 years.
He served as the first chairman of Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Taskforce) and also the Commander of the State-funded Rapid Response Squad (RRS).
FINDINGS: A quick check by the Quest Times gathered that there is no official document supportingn the appointment of Odumosu as EFCC boss.
Messages sent to the Special Assistant to Mr. President on Communication and Strategy, Dele Alake was yet to respond at the time of filing this report.
VERDICT: The claimed appointment of Odumosu as EFCC Chairman is still a rumour waxing on social media at this moment on Wednesday morning.
