In a strategic move that signals its entry into the gaming industry, entertainment giant Netflix has introduced a new gaming app, expanding its digital footprint beyond streaming movies and TV series.
With a storied history of redefining how audiences engage with content, Netflix’s foray into gaming has been a topic of interest since November 2021. Now, the company has taken a definitive step by unveiling its gaming app on the App Store, offering iOS users a glimpse of its gaming ambitions.
While details about the specific gaming offerings and their integration onto television screens remain under wraps, the arrival of the ‘Netflix Game Controller’ app has created a buzz. This innovative application introduces a novel way for users to play games on their TVs—by pairing their mobile phones and using them as game controllers.
This approach eliminates the need for dedicated gaming consoles. The app’s design mimics the familiar layout of popular gaming controllers, featuring four color-coded buttons akin to those on gaming consoles like PlayStation or Xbox. Additionally, it includes a movable directional toggle and a menu button for a seamless gaming experience.

Netflix’s interest in cloud streaming technology became evident in October 2022, when the company’s vice president of gaming emphasized that their gaming app is not intended to compete with established gaming platforms like PlayStation or Xbox. Rather, it’s positioned as an enhancement to traditional gaming systems, allowing for a fluid and natural gaming experience across devices.
Looking ahead, Netflix has unveiled a comprehensive gaming strategy. In March 2023, the company announced plans to launch approximately 40 games in the coming year. Collaborations with partners are in progress to develop an additional 70 games, complemented by the production of 16 in-house titles. Furthermore, Netflix is leveraging its partnerships with established franchises to offer specific games to its subscribers, all without incurring additional costs.
Among the standout franchises set to feature on the Netflix gaming app is Ustwo Monument Valley 1 and 2, underlining the platform’s commitment to curate a diverse and captivating gaming selection.
Currently, the app’s availability is limited to Apple devices running iOS 15 or later, granting iOS users early access to this groundbreaking venture. Meanwhile, Android users will need to exercise patience, awaiting their turn to explore Netflix’s latest innovation.
