Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Edo State on Monday, marched through the streets of Benin City to voice their concerns over the prevailing economic challenges facing Nigerians.
Protesters flooded the city, brandishing placards emblazoned with slogans like “Put an End to Economic Hardship” and “Federal Government, Alleviate Hunger in Nigeria Now.” Their aim was to highlight the plight of the populace amidst rising prices and a harsh standard of living.
This demonstration echoes similar gatherings in Ibadan and Lagos, where citizens expressed their discontent with the exorbitant costs of basic necessities.
The catalyst for these protests traces back to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which recently announced plans for a nationwide protest slated to commence imminently.
The NLC’s decision to mobilize stems from the perceived lack of government action on agreements made on October 2, 2023, subsequent to the removal of the fuel subsidy.
In response to the NLC’s 14-day ultimatum to address the widespread hardship, various groups and individuals have taken to the streets in peaceful demonstrations across the country, highlighting the urgency for tangible solutions to mitigate the economic strain felt by Nigerians.
