On Thursday, a yet-to-be-identified woman lost her life in a heart-breaking accident when a massive 40ft container fell from a truck in the busy Eze-Iweka area near Upper Iweka Bus Stop along the Onitsha-Owerri Road.
According to witnesses, the tragic incident unfolded when a parked truck, busy unloading goods, unexpectedly rolled away without a driver. As it rolled, the heavy 40ft container fell, tragically trapping the woman.
Thankfully, some nearby traders managed to escape the impending danger, but sadly, the woman couldn’t avoid the tragic fate that befell her.
At the time of our report, the victim remained trapped under the enormous container while rescue efforts were underway.
Margaret Onabe, the acting Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the incident, revealing that it occurred around 3 p.m.
Onabe attributed this sorrowful accident to a brake failure in the truck and mentioned that efforts were underway to secure a crane to lift the colossal container.
She said, “Around 3:08 p.m. on Thursday, an unidentified driver of a commercial Mark trailer was involved in a road accident. The likely cause of this fatal accident was brake failure. Witnesses saw the truck parked for unloading, and suddenly it rolled away driverless, tragically striking an unsuspecting person. A female adult lost her life due to the 40ft container on the trailer.”
Additionally, she disclosed, “The FRSC rescue team, along with the Awada police team, is making determined efforts to obtain a crane to lift the container that trapped the victim of the road accident. The Awada police division is also investigating the truck’s driver for necessary actions.”
