Nigerians have continued to express shock and anger following the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) arrest of the Accountant General of the Federation, (AGF) Ahmed Idris over N80 billion fraud.

The AGF’s arrest was made public in a statement by the EFCC, where the anti-graft agency disclosed that he amassed illicit funds through “bogus consultancies and other illegal activities”, using family, associates and proxies.

The statement further revealed that the ill-gotten funds were laundered through real estate investments in Abuja and Kano.

Reacting to the news, some social media users moaned that despite the challenges facing the nation, public officials were only interested in stealing scarce funds which could have been optimally used.

Others expressed disbelief that a single man toyed with such a huge amount, leaving some to wonder what those in more senior positions are “doing.”

Here are some reactions gathered by The Quest Times:

@AbdulMahmud01 Even the Accountant General of the Federation has his hands in the cookies jar? Arrested by the EFCC for N80b theft! Make dem kuku auction naija for Jumia or Ebay or Alibaba

@OgbeniDipo Hold the federal government accountable and demand that they prioritise the education sector. ASUU will not call off this strike if they don’t see money, with this new Accountant General of the Federation N80 billion scandal and EFCC arrest.

@YeleSowore Ahmed Idris, the Accountant General of the @Mbuhari’s Federation has just been arrested by the @officialEFCC for stealing N80billion…but their “Economists” will tell you that N100k minimum wage will cause “inflation!” #SoworeForPresident#WeCantContinueLikeThis

@AM_Saleeem Dear ASUU, don’t call off your strike until they settle your demands. The country has money. EFCC just arrested AGF for ₦80bn fraud. Yours faithfully; A concerned citizen.

@iSlimfit The most amusing part of that news is where EFCC said N80Billion ONLY. Bruhhhhh, what do you mean ONLY????!

@FS_Yusuf_ When is EFCC arresting Hadiza Bala? If you are impressed that the EFCC is parading the “arrest of the Accountant General of the Federation while an alleged corrupt former EFCC boss, Magu is promoted today by the Police Service Commission, then you need a deliverance.

@Ambrosia_Ijebu If Accountant General can steal US$135MM under Buhari, just imagine how much CBN Governor can steal. EFCC una no dey see that one?

@abdulazizumar99 EFCC arrested the Accountant General of Nigeria for stealing 80bn, just one person! Imagine how much other politicians might have stolen. How much does ASUU need again? If Buhari cannot fund education, some people are on ground to steal the money.
