A 20-year-old lady identified as Nwaedoka Chindimma from IZZI in Ebonyi State reportedly dumped a newborn baby in a pit toilet immediately after he was born in the Otuocha community, in the Anambra East Local Government area, where she had gone to work on a farm.
This information was disclosed by Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the media assistant to the commissioner for women’s affairs and social welfare, Ify Obinabo.
The newborn was rescued from the pit toilet just three days after his delivery. This rescue operation happened on Tuesday after residents heard his loud cry for help and alerted security agents and the State Ministry of Women’s Social Welfare.

Consequently, the child was rushed to the nearest hospital, Chukwuemeka Odemegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka, where he received immediate medical attention.

According to Ikeanyionwu, the news of the baby’s demise was received late on Wednesday after treatment had commenced at the hospital.
“All efforts to resuscitate the baby, including administering oxygen and fluids with cardiopulmonary resuscitation by the hospital, proved abortive,” she noted.
The state Governor’s wife, Money Soludo, who also reacted to the incident, described the action of the baby’s mother as “inhumane and distraught,” expressing that as a mother, she felt the pain of having to deal with such news.
Her reaction was contained in a statement signed and issued to journalists in Awka on Wednesday by her media aide, Daniel Ezeigwe.
She further expressed that she was praying for the full recovery of the baby and was looking forward to visiting him, adding that the news of his death came as a big shock.
