Renowned artiste, Adedamola Adefolahan, famously known as Fireboy DML, recently shared insights into his evolving musical style, addressing criticisms surrounding his departure from the sound of his debut album.
In a candid interview with The Beat 99.9 FM, Lagos, Fireboy explained that his musical transformation stems from personal growth and newfound wealth, emphasizing that creating music similar to his debut album, “Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps,” is now unfeasible.
The ‘Peru’ hitmaker urged fans to revisit his earlier work if they long for the “old” Fireboy, highlighting the inevitability of change and artistic evolution.
He expressed, “How do you expect a 27-year-old millionaire, who has experienced life to make another album like ‘LTG’ again? Think about it. How? Even the album [‘LTG’] it’s not every time you going to be in the mood to listen to it. Sometimes, it maybe ‘Apollo’, or ‘Playboy.’ I think people need to understand that artists are human beings too and they need to grow.”
Quest Times notes that Fireboy, signed to YBNL Nation, founded by Nigerian rapper Olamide, gained prominence with his debut studio album in 2019, winning accolades such as Listener’s Choice and earning a Song of the Year nomination for “Jealous” at the 2020 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival.
The breakthrough single, “Jealous,” characterized by guitar riffs, traditional drums, and African harmonies, showcased Fireboy’s unique fusion of country and soul music.
Directed by Director K, the song’s visuals complement its exploration of love and complex emotions.
Fireboy continued his musical journey with the romantic single “What If I Say” in June 2019, and the self-assertive “King” in August 2019.
Both releases demonstrated his versatility and artistic growth, receiving positive responses from fans.
