The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has written to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.
INEC had suspended Barr Hudu Yunusa Ari in the aftermath of what was deemed an illegal declaration, as he wasn’t the Returning Officer for the election.
Yunusa’s suspension followed his announcement of what was eventually tagged ‘a fake result’ on Sunday, while the collation of results was still going on in the Adamawa State governorship election rerun.
The Quest Times earlier reported that Yunusa declared Aishatu Dahiru Binani of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the governorship election in the state even though the law does not empower him to announce the results.
INEC also suspended the collation of results for the polls.
But shortly after, the national headquarters of INEC nullified and voided the announcement of Binani as the winner of the governorship election and consequently invited Yunusa and others for questioning over the declaration.
However, the commission met on Tuesday and requested the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.
This was contained in a statement posted on its verified Twitter handle on Tuesday, stressing that collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer.
The statement reads; “At its meeting today, 18th April 2023, the Commission discussed matters arising from the Adamawa Governorship election and decided to:
“Write to the Inspector-General of Police for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.
“Request the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.
“The collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer,” the statement added.
