Twenty-six members of the Rivers State House of Assembly gathered for a plenary session at the assembly’s residential quarters, responding to the recent demolition of the Assembly Complex ordered by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The governor cited the need for reconstruction after an alleged “arson attack” on October 29, 2023.
The lawmakers, who recently switched allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), reportedly enjoy support from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister.
This session, led by Martins Amaewhule’s faction, unfolded in the aftermath of the declaration of their seats as vacant by the Edison Ehie-led group on Wednesday, in response to their defection.
During Thursday’s plenary, the Amaewhule group vehemently criticized the state government’s decision to demolish the Assembly Complex. Ofiks Kagbang, representing the Andoni constituency, passionately moved a motion condemning the demolition, which received unanimous approval from the House.
In addition, Major Jack presented the report on the Rivers State Local Government Amendment Bill, aiming to curb the governor’s authority to dissolve Local Government Executives when passed into law.
