Rivers State’s new Speaker, Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo, has outlined his vision for steering the state assembly towards a path of legality and productivity.
Jumbo, hailing from the Bonny Constituency, addressed the public following his ascent to the esteemed position, emphasizing the lawful and constitutional nature of his election.
“I believe my election into office is legal and constitutional,” Jumbo affirmed.
His election, conducted in accordance with the House’s Standing Order during a plenary session on Wednesday morning, marked a pivotal moment in the state’s legislative landscape.
Expressing gratitude to his fellow members for their trust in him, Jumbo acknowledged the responsibility bestowed upon him, especially in light of his predecessor’s resignation.
“My gratitude to the members for entrusting me with the role of Speaker after the resignation of former Speaker, Edison Ehie,” he expressed in his acceptance speech.
Reflecting on recent developments within the assembly, Jumbo touched upon the tumultuous events that unfolded since the last session convened on December 13, 2023. Notably, he addressed the significant defection of 25 former lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Party (APC) on December 11, 2023.
In light of these developments, Jumbo stressed the nullification of actions undertaken by the defected lawmakers, citing legal precedent.
Furthermore, Jumbo extended an olive branch to Governor Fubara, calling for cooperation to advance the interests of Rivers State.
