There is mild tension in Kano State over the impending court appearance of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and others on charges of corruption and abuse of office.
Ganduje, who currently serves as the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), along with his wife, son, and five others, are set to face charges related to financial impropriety during his tenure.
The issuance of formal summons by a Kano state High Court last Tuesday has escalated tensions, sparking a war of words between supporters of the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the APC.
The NNPP-led administration in Kano State initiated a Commission of Inquiry to investigate Ganduje’s eight-year tenure, fueling speculation and heated debates on local radio stations and social media platforms.
Concerns have been raised among residents of the commercial city, with fears that the ongoing probe could potentially lead to security challenges in the state.
Yakubu Isa, a resident of Hotoro, expressed apprehension about the timing of the political feud, stating, “I think the timing, and every other time isn’t the best to instigate a political war against one another, after all, the [Islamic] religion is against probe.”
Another resident, Tanimu Auwalu of Rijiyallemo, urged the governor to focus on governance. “Government should preoccupy itself with the execution of blueprints instead of the needless war on political opponents,” he emphasized.
Garba Kore, an APC stalwart, criticized the governor’s actions. “The governor is fighting a proxy war against a former governor. In the interest of equity and fairness, let them extend the Dr. Ganduje probe to cover his tenure as Kwankwaso’s deputy,” he remarked.
Alhaji Musa Iliyasu Kwankwaso, another APC chieftain, warned Governor Yusuf, saying, “Let it be known to Governor Yusuf, that who is living inside a glass house shouldn’t throw stones, because the stone may eventually hit him.”
Despite the tensions, the police have assured citizens that the city remains safe for all lawful activities.
