A photo of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, alongside Attan Achonu, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate in Imo State, has ignited various opinions online, with many accusing Ajaero’s of political bias.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a recent violent attack on Ajaero, further exacerbating tensions between the NLC and the Imo State government.
In an official statement, the NLC alleged that Ajaero was subjected to physical assault and unlawful detention, during which he was reportedly “beaten and blindfolded,” and his personal belongings, including his phones, were seized and not returned.
In contrast, the Imo State Police command has refuted the NLC’s claims, contending that Ajaero was not arrested but rather placed under protective custody to safeguard him from potential mob attack.
In response to the assault on Ajaero and the alleged failure of the federal government to fulfill an agreement, the leadership of both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly called for a nationwide strike commencing on November 14, and a complete work stoppage in Imo State. They have even questioned the necessity of holding the scheduled election in the state on November 11.
Below are some reactions to the photos of Ajaero with Achonu:
@Adewale Adekoya: Can you see a Labour Chairman violating the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which prohibit Labour’s from partisan politics. He is working for Obi and Labour party and you are there jubilating with the criminal who was working for his own personal interest. Let him Ajaero be caged and the TUC Chairman should beware of him. Don’t pallie with him, his mission bis different from yours.
