TikTok has announced that it has introduced a new feature allowing creators to make text-only posts, expanding the non-video options on the short-form video app.
Similar to Instagram Reels, TikTok creators can now upload text with a simple background, giving users the ability to express themselves in ways beyond video content.
This isn’t the first time TikTok has ventured into non-video features. Last year, the platform introduced “Photo Mode,” which enabled users to share multiple photos in a slideshow format with captions of up to 2,200 characters.
The new text posting feature is reminiscent of Photo Mode but without the inclusion of photos.
Here’s how to use the new text post feature:

- Log into the TikTok app.
- Access the Camera page.
- Three choices will be available: photo, video, and text.
- Select “Text.”
- Type out the desired words for the post.
- On the Post page, users can further customize the text post by adding sound, tagging a location, enabling comments, allowing Duets, adding stickers, choosing background colors, and more.
With this update, TikTok joins the ranks of social media platforms that offer text-based sharing. For instance, earlier this month, Meta launched “Threads,” a Twitter competitor aiming to create a more lighthearted and jovial space for users.
Although Threads initially saw immense success, with 100 million signups in its first week, its momentum has waned due to the absence of many features found on Twitter.
Nevertheless, this trend indicates a growing demand for alternatives to Twitter’s text-based platform, especially since its acquisition by Tesla CEO Elon Musk late last year.
Since Musk’s takeover, Twitter has witnessed a rise in extremism and unbanned suspended accounts.
The platform also made changes to its verification system, removing blue verification checkmarks from journalists, celebrities, and publications, unless they subscribed to the premium service, Twitter Blue, at a monthly cost of $8.
