Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on Sunday said that 24 out of 44 local government areas of the state have no commercial banks.
Ganduje made this known few hours after President Muhammadu Buhari authorised the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to extend the deadline for the withdrawal of old 1000, 500 and 200 naira notes by 10 days.
The Quest Times reports that the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele had on Sunday said that the apex bank has extended the deadline from January 31 to February 10, 2023, to allow collection of old notes.
However, Governor Ganduje, while briefing journalists after he led a delegation of critical stakeholders to meet with President Buhari in his country home in Daura, Katsina State on Sunday, said that shortage of the new Naira notes have caused hardship in the state.
He said, “Kano State being comparatively a rural state, still have 24 local governments without banks.
“Most of the banks are concentrated within Kano metropolitan.”
