An attack by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers have left some students of the Gateway Polytechnic injured, the school is located at Saapade in Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The unfortunate incident, unfolded when the robbers stormed into the students hostels, carting away their belongings, raped some female students, and shot some others, who were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Quest Times gathered that the students were attacked at about 1 a.m. two Fridays ago and last Sunday when the robbers invaded Ipara-Remo and Ode-Remo communities, hosting some students of the polytechnic.
While, speaking on the incident, some students explained that the robbery attacks had become a recurring decimal in the communities over time, noting that the recent attack had reached it’s peak.
Meanwhile, an anonymous member of the polytechnic management, who spoke on Sunday, disclosed that the management was fully aware of the attack, saying that efforts were ongoing to curtail security breaches within the communities.
Also, the incident was confirmed by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Omolola Odutola, she said the injured student had been discharged from hospital.
However, Odutola, debunked claims that a student died during the incident.
The police spokesperson stated, “The robbery occurred on the same day and the student who was injured has recovered and been since discharged from the hospital”.
“There was a meeting between the students and the Commissioner of Police and the CP urged them to always report incidents formally to the Divisional Police Officer and not to take law into their own hands by displaying their grievances first to their school authorities who would better notify the Ogun State Police Command”.
The statement added, “No student died in the attack.”
