Kenneth Okonkwo, a Labour Party (LP) chieftain has strongly criticized Chief Doyin Okupe, the former Director-General of the 2023 Obi-Datti presidential campaign, following his resignation from the party, citing ‘ideological differences.’
Okonkwo, who served as a spokesperson for the 2023 Obi-Datti presidential campaign, expressed his discontent by stating that if the Labour Party had emerged victorious in the 2023 presidential elections, Okupe would not have remembered his purported ‘ideological differences.’
Chief Doyin Okupe initially resigned from his position as Obi’s campaign director-general in 2022 after being found guilty of money laundering by a court. His subsequent resignation as a member of the Labour Party on January 8, 2024, was attributed to ideological differences.
According to Okonkwo, Okupe’s departure from the party occurred after his resignation as the campaign director-general, and there was no evidence of continued engagement with the party.
He remarked, “Immediately, he (Okupe) stepped down as the DG, I can say with every degree of responsibility that he constructively had left the party because I wasn’t aware of any other interaction he had with the party. I think he just verbalized it.”
The actor and lawyer questioned the clarity of ideologies within political parties in Nigeria, expressing his uncertainty about which party truly upholds a distinct ideology.
Okonkwo highlighted Okupe’s extensive involvement with various political parties in the country, suggesting that at his age, Okupe should be considering spending time with his grandchildren instead of hopping between parties.
