The political turmoil in Rivers State has intensified with the resignation of 11 Commissioners from Governor SIM Fubara’s administration.
The wave of resignations commenced with the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor, SAN, followed by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Emeka Woke, who previously served as Chief of Staff to former Governor Nyesom Wike.
The list of resigning commissioners includes Chief Emeka Woke, Prof. Zacchaeus Adaongor, Dr. Dax Kelly George Alabo, Dr. Jacob Nbina, Engr. Charles Amadi, Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, Barr. (Mrs) Inime Aguma, Hon. Nwafor Uchechuku, Isaac Kamalu, Chima Aguma, and Marshal Obuzor.
The state has been embroiled in a crisis, triggered by 27 State House of Assembly lawmakers aligned with Wike initiating impeachment proceedings against Gov Fubara. This led to the torching of the State House of Assembly complex to disrupt proceedings.
The turmoil deepened as Wike loyalists defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. In response, lawmakers loyal to the current governor declared their seats vacant, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct fresh elections.
On Wednesday, the state government demolished the House of Assembly complex, citing safety concerns for legislative activities.
