Reactions have followed the exposure of Nigerian blogger David Hundeyin as an academic fraud on social media by Oxford University’s leading student newspaper, Cherwell.
The blogger has consistently referred to himself as a Fellow of the University of Cambridge, with a Fellowship conferred on him by the James Currey Society, a UK non-profit organization founded by Hundeyin’s associate, Onyeka Nwelue, whose status as an Academic Visitor was terminated by both Oxford and Cambridge for his unauthorized commercial use of their emblems.
QUEST TIMES discovered that the James Currey Society, which bestowed the title “James Currey Fellow” on him, is not funded or endowed by the University of Cambridge or its Centre for African Studies.
The news elicited mixed reactions from social media users, particularly those on Twitter, with some labeling him an outright fraud.
Here are some reactions gathered by The Quest Times:
@dio1vanni Funny how this man of ‘disreputable’ character is the news plug for some that someone not convicted was into drug dealings in the US… I’d believe the devil ahead of this monumental fraud.
@DrMusabayero Unfortunately, those TWO universities would now profile Nigerians as high risk elements in their reputational risk assessment. Those criminal elements wherever they go, they spoil everything. When things get tough, they turn back nd blame the Nigerian Government for their crimes.
@Lyon_nazim David has always been a fraud. This time he met his Waterloo
@findurvoice_11 The fraudster was going to be exposed sooner than later. It was only a matter of time. I’m not surprised at all.
@Nigeriaexchanger Kindly explain how a man with this profile is a blogger? In 2020, Hundeyin won the People Journalism Prize for Africa. In December 2021, he was awarded as the maiden GRC and Anti-FinCrime Reporter of the Year. Hundeyin has been nominated in the Innovation and Investigative Journalism Category of the 2022 Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award.
In October 2022, David Hundeyin was named as an academic visitor at the Centre for African Studies in the University of Cambridge for the 2023 James Currey Fellowship and Residence.
