The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, passed a resolution addressing the ongoing fuel scarcity plaguing the nation.
Members of the House voted to summon the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, and the Minister for the gas sector, Ekperikpe Ekpo, to provide explanations regarding the situation.
Additionally, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has been summoned to shed light on the petrol shortages in the country.
The decision came after a motion of urgent national importance was raised by House member Umar Ajilo, who expressed concerns over the persistent queues at petrol stations nationwide. Ajilo emphasized the urgency of the matter, prompting the House to take swift action.
The House expects the summoned officials to provide clarity on the reasons behind the scarcity and outline the measures being taken to resolve it. However, no specific date has been set for their appearance before the House.
Last week, fresh queues emerged across the country, extending into the new week. Motorists found themselves stranded, purchasing petrol at exorbitant prices, with reports of prices reaching as high as N800 per litre, while black marketers charged as much as N1,500 per litre.
In addition to addressing the fuel scarcity, the House also directed the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to halt the implementation of the new tariff.
The resolution was passed during the plenary session on Tuesday following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance by lawmaker Kama Nkemkanma.
