In a troubling turn of events, suspected political thugs have set fire to the chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
This incident unfolded as a response to the House’s intent to initiate impeachment proceedings against the House Leader, Hon. Edison Ehie, and the State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, on Monday.
The destructive act occurred at approximately 9:45 pm, casting a somber atmosphere around the assembly complex, which is adjacent to the State Police Command.
Sources indicate that the legislative body had finalized plans for the impeachment proceedings to be carried out on Monday during its scheduled session, driven by undisclosed issues.
Subsequently, a group of youths reportedly invaded the assembly complex, leading to the arson attack.
A senior police officer in the state, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident and highlighted that it necessitated the combined efforts of the police and the state Fire Service teams to extinguish the flames.
The source stated, “Yes, the main chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly was under attack and set on fire. It was the collaborative efforts of the police and the fire service team that helped to put out the fire.”
At present, security personnel have taken control of the assembly complex premises. Over 17 security vehicles and four Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) are stationed at the facility, and more than 50 Federal Security personnel have been deployed to maintain order.
There are also unconfirmed reports that the Rivers Government House Camp Commander has been removed from their position.
