Nigeria and Benin Republic’s joint bid to host the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027 faced a setback as Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda emerged as the triumphant hosts for the tournament.
The announcement, made by Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), took place in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday.
Additionally, Morocco was declared the host for the 2025 edition of the tournament.
The North African countries secured the hosting rights with a unanimous vote, amassing a total of 22 votes. This unexpected outcome marks a significant shift in the hosting landscape for AFCON.
Nigeria’s sole experience in hosting the AFCON dates back to 1980, a memorable year when Christian Chukwu captained the team to victory in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, including former President Shehu Shagari. However, their joint hosting venture with Ghana in 2000 concluded in disappointment, as Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions clinched the coveted trophy at Lagos’ National Stadium.
As the dust settles on this decision, football enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the upcoming tournaments and the chance to witness the beautiful game unfold on African soil.
