Lawyers attending the annual general conference organized by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Abuja took a notable stance by walking out during the early hours of Thursday. The cause of this dramatic exit was the announcement of controversial Nigerian singer, Portable, as the guest performer for the event known as ‘Unbarred,’ hosted at the Velodrome in MKO Abiola Stadium.
As the NBA president, Yakubu Maikyau, delivered a brief speech and a DJ entertained the legal professionals, anticipation rose for the appearance of the unexpected artist. However, the choice of Portable stirred strong emotions among the lawyers in attendance.
Visible signs of discontent spread as many lawyers expressed their displeasure with Portable’s inclusion in the event. This frustration eventually led them to exit the venue, either on foot or by driving away from the stadium, around 1 am.

One of the lawyers conveyed their astonishment, stating, “How dare they call Portable to come and play for lawyers at the conference? Can you imagine? Normally, Unbarred doesn’t end till 3am or 4am but we are leaving for our hotels. We are so upset.”
Another lawyer added, ““They spoilt my day with this Zazu. He couldn’t even wear a shirt” another lawyer said
Another perspective emerged from a lawyer who explained, “I, too, left the event, although fatigue played a part in my decision. A significant number of conference attendees shared dissatisfaction over Portable’s involvement.”
Despite the walkout, some lawyers chose to remain behind and witness Portable’s performance. Social media quickly spread videos capturing the unconventional singer, shirtless, climbing various equipment structures within the stadium. The incident showcased the polarizing impact of entertainment choices within a professional setting.
