In a historic move, 31-year-old Huang Jie, overcoming discrimination and age-related skepticism, is set to be sworn in as Taiwan’s first openly gay Member of Parliament on Thursday.
Despite facing hurdles for her LGBTQ identity and youth, Huang’s victory in the January 13 poll for a seat in southern Kaohsiung city came as a surprise.
The former journalist entered politics in 2018, winning a city council seat on the New Power Party ticket. Later, as an independent, she secured re-election in 2022.
Joining the Democratic Progressive Party last August, Huang replaced an incumbent lawmaker, demonstrating resilience amid challenges and limited campaign time.
Political commentators had given her slim odds due to her sexual orientation, given opposition from certain groups in her constituency.
In an interview, Huang emphasized her win as a “positive outcome” and a reflection of societal progress in Taiwan.
However, she acknowledged the persistent challenges she faced throughout her political career, including discriminatory attacks in 2021, which she survived.
Campaigning in Kaohsiung involved temple and market visits, with Huang not explicitly emphasizing her sexual orientation.
Quest Times further reports that despite her victory, she recognized the need for further progress in LGBTQ rights, aiming to address issues like gender equality, human rights, and generational justice as the youngest legislator.
While nearly 42% of the legislature comprises women, including Huang, she stressed the ongoing obstacles for women in politics, noting the gender disparity in trust.
Huang remains hopeful, focusing on her priorities to advocate for a more inclusive and just society, stating, “I believe the space is wider for everyone to try different things.”
