Governor Hyacinth Ali of Benue State has ordered the complete enforcement of the anti-open grazing law after the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum given to herdsmen.
The governor stressed the need for security agencies across the state to crack down on any herders violating the law.
During a press briefing held at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House in Makurdi, the governor, represented by his deputy, Dr. Sam Ode, highlighted the influx of herders into the state, prompting the State Security Council’s decision.
Deputy Governor Ode, expressing satisfaction with the monitoring committee’s report, reiterated that the law applies to all violators without discrimination. He warned of prosecution for anyone found contravening the law, regardless of their identity.
The Commissioner of Justice and Public Order, Barrister Fidelis Mnyim, also noted the necessity for cattle rearers to ranch their livestock in compliance with the law. He cautioned that those engaging in open grazing would face legal consequences.
Additionally, Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, the Force Commander of Operation Whirlstroke (OPWS), disclosed the formation of a committee by the Benue State Security Council to develop strategies for implementing the ultimatum. He described it as a non-kinetic approach to conflict resolution.
He expressed satisfaction with the herders’ compliance observed in the withdrawal and assured full enforcement of the government’s directive by Operation Whirlstroke and all security agencies in the state.
